Laser Therapy
What is Laser Therapy?
Laser Therapy is a non-invasive, drug free treatment designed to facilitate wound healing, reduce inflammation, and treat musculoskeletal pain.
This can help with both chronic and acute pain.
Laser therapy has been used overseas for many years in both humans and animals.
Proven & Safe
Laser therapy has been thoroughly researched with many clinical studies and papers now published that prove the beneficial effects of laser therapy.
A benefit of Class IV lasers is that they allow therapeutic doses of photons to be applied over broader area and to deeper tissues in smaller windows of time, which is a significant consideration when treating animals.
How it works
Laser therapy uses a process known as photo-bio-modulation (PBM) to stimulate cellular metabolism, to reduce inflammation, and stimulate injured cells to heal at an accelerated pace.
Class IV lasers use light at wavelengths that are in the electromagnetic spectrum (non visible), and able to safely penetrate fur, skin, muscle and tissue. At these wavelengths it has been shown that laser light triggers a chemical and biological reaction within tissue. In a similar way to how the sun's light energy can cause photosynthesis in plants, laser light energy can stimulate amazing healing benefits in people and animals.
Laser treatments are an excellent way to provide pain relief to your equine companion. Laser therapy reduces pain by reducing inflammation through Vasodilation (the opening of blood vessels) and also by activating the lymphatic drainage system, thus draining swollen areas. The result is a reduction in swelling which reduces pain. The lasers also stimulate nerve cells that block pain signals from being transmitted to the brain, thereby decreasing nerve sensitivity.
Because there is less inflammation, less swelling and an interruption of pain signals to the brain, the horse will experience less pain.
Laser treatments for horses also stimulate the production of high levels of naturally-produced endorphins which further counteract your horses pain.
Because laser works directly on injured or affected areas laser treatments can help speed up healing, strengthen muscle and tissue, improve mobility and enhance your horse's overall quality of life almost immediately as well as decreasing the reliance on drugs to reduce pain levels.
Can Laser Therapy help my horse?
Laser Therapy is a very effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions including:
WOUNDS | ARTHRITIS | SKIN CONDITIONS | PAIN & INFLAMMATION | PAIN RELIEF
POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY | REHABILITATION | KISSING SPINE | FRACTURES
SHIN SPLINTS | LAMINITIS | SESAMOIDITIS | TENDONITIS
MUSCLE AND SKELETAL INJURIES | HEMATOMAS
What can l Expect at my horses's Laser Therapy Appointment ?
The laser wand will be passed directly over the affected area (off-contact for wounds, on-contact for deeper joint and tissue injuries) for somewhere between 5 and 20 minutes approximately.
The laser treatment is totally pain free and very comforting.
As the laser is administered, your horse may feel a gentle soothing warmth, tingling or no sensation at all.
As areas of pain inflammation become more comfortable, any anxiety or tension your horse may be experiencing quickly dissipates.
